1.6T OSFP224 vs OSFP-XD: Form Factor Guide
1.6T optics are designed for the next generation of high-bandwidth AI and data-centre networks. OSFP224 and OSFP-XD are form-factor approaches that can appear in 1.6T designs, but the correct choice is determined by the host platform and complete link specification. OSFP224 OSFP224 is associated with higher per-lane electrical signalling for next-generation high-speed interfaces. When selecting a 1.6T OSFP224 optic, confirm the exact host port, electrical interface, optical standard, connector and required reach. OSFP-XD OSFP-XD is an extended-density OSFP-family approach intended to provide additional electrical lane capacity for very high aggregate bandwidth. It should not be assumed interchangeable with OSFP224 simply because both can be used in 1.6T-class designs. HOST PORT FIRST The switch, NIC, DPU or other host equipment determines which physical and electrical module family can be used. Identify the exact platform before selecting the optic. OPTICAL STANDARD SECOND After the host interface is confirmed, select the optical standard from the physical link requirement: fibre type, connector, reach and whether a breakout architecture is required. THERMAL AND POWER DESIGN At 1.6T, module power and thermal design become increasingly important. Use the host-platform and product specifications rather than assuming that every module within a form-factor family has the same operating requirements. COMPATIBILITY Photon Optics only publishes compatibility where approved evidence is available. Products are manufactured to order with a typical manufacturing and delivery lead time of 2-3 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Are OSFP224 and OSFP-XD interchangeable?

No. They are different host-interface approaches and should not be assumed interchangeable. Confirm the exact host platform and port specification.

What should I check before selecting a 1.6T optic?

Confirm the exact host port, required optical standard, fibre type, connector, reach, power and thermal requirements, plus platform compatibility.

Why does thermal design matter more at 1.6T?

Higher-bandwidth modules can have significant power and cooling requirements. The exact module and host specifications should be used when designing the link.
