800G OSFP vs QSFP-DD800: Form Factor Guide
OSFP and QSFP-DD800 are two form-factor families used for high-speed 800G networking. They are not interchangeable simply because both can support 800G connectivity. OSFP OSFP is a larger pluggable form factor designed with substantial thermal capacity for high-speed optics. It is widely used in AI and high-performance data-centre networking. Different OSFP host implementations exist, so the exact equipment and cage design must be identified. QSFP-DD800 QSFP-DD800 extends the QSFP-DD family for higher electrical lane rates suitable for 800G interfaces. It retains the compact QSFP-style form-factor approach, but host support must be confirmed on the exact platform. WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE? The host equipment determines the starting point. If the switch, NIC or DPU provides an OSFP interface, select an OSFP product that matches the required optical link. If it provides QSFP-DD800, select a compatible QSFP-DD800 product. Do not choose the shell independently of the host port. OPTICAL STANDARD IS A SEPARATE DECISION After identifying the host form factor, select the optical standard from reach, fibre, connector and breakout requirements. An OSFP or QSFP-DD800 label alone does not tell you whether the optic is DR8, 2xFR4 or another optical design. AI NETWORKING 800G interfaces are increasingly relevant to high-bandwidth AI fabrics. Exact switch, adapter and DPU implementations vary, making platform-specific compatibility checking important. Photon Optics only publishes compatibility where approved evidence is available. Products are manufactured to order with a typical manufacturing and delivery lead time of 2-3 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Are 800G OSFP and QSFP-DD800 interchangeable?

No. They are different form-factor families. The exact host port must be identified before selecting an 800G transceiver.

Why is OSFP used for 800G?

OSFP provides substantial physical and thermal capacity for high-speed optics and is used on a range of 800G AI and data-centre networking platforms.

What is QSFP-DD800?

QSFP-DD800 is a high-speed member of the QSFP-DD family designed for electrical lane rates suitable for 800G interfaces on supported equipment.

Does the form factor determine the optical reach?

No. Form factor and optical standard are separate choices. Reach depends on the specific optical standard and product specification.
