Planning 1.6T Optical Links for AI and Data-Centre Networks
A buyer-focused checklist for planning 1.6T optical links: host interface, fibre, reach, connector, breakout, thermal design and compatibility.

A 1.6T transceiver should not be selected from bandwidth alone. Successful deployment depends on the host interface and the complete optical link design.
1. IDENTIFY THE HOST PLATFORM
Start with the exact switch, NIC, DPU or other network platform and identify its supported port type. At 1.6T, form factor and electrical interface are fundamental selection criteria.
2. DEFINE THE LINK
Document the required distance, fibre type and installed connector system. Select the optical standard from these physical requirements rather than choosing a module from speed alone.
3. CHECK STRAIGHT-LINK OR BREAKOUT REQUIREMENTS
Determine whether the application requires a direct 1.6T link or a breakout to lower-speed interfaces. Breakout capability is product and platform specific, so the module, cabling, far-end optics and host configuration must all be considered together.
4. REVIEW POWER AND THERMALS
High-bandwidth optics require careful attention to module power and host cooling capability. Confirm the product and platform limits before deployment.
5. CONFIRM PLATFORM COMPATIBILITY
Coding, firmware and host-platform requirements can affect operation. Photon Optics only publishes compatibility where approved evidence is available.
6. PLAN PROCUREMENT
Photon Optics products are manufactured to order. Typical manufacturing and delivery lead time is 2-3 weeks. For project and quantity requirements, request a quotation with the host platform and link specification so the proposed optic can be checked before order.
This process is especially useful for AI fabrics where bandwidth density, cable architecture and platform generations are changing quickly.
Frequently asked questions
What information is needed to specify a 1.6T optical link?
Provide the exact host platform and port, required distance, fibre and connector, optical standard, whether breakout is required, and any platform-specific compatibility requirements.
Can every 1.6T optic be used for breakout?
No. Breakout capability depends on the exact module, optical architecture, cabling, far-end optics and host-platform support.
How long does Photon Optics take to supply 1.6T products?
Products are manufactured to order. Typical manufacturing and delivery lead time is 2-3 weeks.
